Auchentoshan is Glasgow’s best-known single malt distillery, set on the edge of the city in Dalmuir, where its urban surroundings make it a rather unusual presence in Scotch whisky. Despite its location amid a densely populated part of the west of Scotland, the distillery has become one of the defining names of the Lowlands, helped by a strong visitor offering and a house style known for its accessibility, freshness and elegance. Auchentoshan’s official visitor site continues to promote tours and whisky experiences at the distillery.
Officially established in 1823, though distilling is often said to have taken place on or near the site before that, Auchentoshan has changed hands several times over the course of its history. It was once part of Morrison Bowmore, but today the distillery sits within Suntory Global Spirits.
Auchentoshan is especially noted for its triple distillation, a rarity in Scotch whisky, which contributes to the distillery’s characteristically light and fruity style. The resulting whisky is often associated with citrus, vanilla, soft malt and a gentle sweetness, making it one of the more approachable malts in Scotland while still retaining enough structure and complexity to reward closer attention.
