Penderyn is the flagship name in modern Welsh whisky, produced by the Welsh Whisky Company and rooted in the village of Penderyn on the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons. Founded in the late 1990s, with spirit first distilled in 2000 and whisky released in 2004, it played the central role in reviving commercial whisky production in Wales after a gap of more than a century.
The distillery is known for a bright, elegant style shaped by its distinctive stills, clean malt character and cask-led maturation. Madeira casks have been especially important to Penderyn’s identity, bringing notes of honeyed fruit, vanilla, spice and gentle oak, while peated, sherry, port and other cask finishes broaden the range.
Today Penderyn has grown beyond its original South Wales home, with additional Welsh sites in Llandudno and Swansea reflecting the brand’s wider national ambitions. Its line-up includes the approachable Dragon range, the Gold range led by Madeira Finish, and various single cask, limited and Icons of Wales releases. As Welsh whisky now benefits from protected geographical indication status, Penderyn remains its best-known standard-bearer: distinctive, accessible and strongly connected to place.
