Armagnac

Armagnac is a French grape brandy made in Gascony in south-west France under an Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée. It has a long history, with the region’s production zone formally defined in 1909 and the AOC production rules established in 1936.

Armagnac and Cognac are both French grape brandies, but they come from different regions and are generally made in different ways. Armagnac is typically distilled once in a continuous Armagnac still, while Cognac is more commonly distilled twice in pot stills. In style, Armagnac is often described as fuller, more rustic and more expressive early on, whereas Cognac is often seen as more polished and lighter in profile. The production method is one of the main reasons for that distinction.

Armagnac is made from wine distilled into eau-de-vie, most often using the traditional continuous Armagnac still, though some producers also use double distillation. After distillation, the spirit is matured in oak casks, usually around 400 litres, largely made from Gascon or Limousin oak. Producers then monitor maturation carefully, managing both oak influence and eventual reduction to bottling strength.

Armagnac is typically rich, aromatic and full-bodied, often showing notes of candied fruit, prune, apricot, orange peel, spice, mellow wood and dried fruit. Older examples can also develop rancio and deeper nutty or savoury complexity. Different producers and styles vary, but warmth, fruit and oak depth are central to the category.

After distillation, Armagnac is aged in oak casks, where it gradually gains colour, softness and aromatic complexity. Wood ageing adds extra complexity and sweetness, and cellar conditions such as temperature and humidity play an important role in how the spirit develops over time. Armagnac may later be reduced with aged petites eaux, a blend of Armagnac and distilled water prepared specifically for reduction.

Armagnac can be labelled by age category or by vintage. Since 2010, the trade has simplified age categories on labels, and a vintage Armagnac corresponds solely to the year of harvest. To be sold as a vintage, it must have spent at least 10 years in wood. You may also sometimes see the bottling date on the label, which helps show how long it was aged before being put into glass.

A vintage Armagnac comes from a single harvest year and is labelled with that year. A blended Armagnac combines eaux-de-vie of different ages or vintages to create a consistent house style, as seen in categories such as VSOP or Hors d’Age. Vintage Armagnac is one of the category’s distinctive features, but blending remains very common and is central to many producers’ ranges.

Armagnac is often enjoyed neat, especially older expressions where the full aromatic range can be appreciated slowly. It can also work well in cocktails and aperitif serves. In practice, younger Armagnacs are often more flexible in cocktails, while older bottlings are usually best sipped on their own.
