The English is a Norfolk single malt whisky from The English Distillery, formerly known as St George’s Distillery, near Roudham. Founded by James and Andrew Nelstrop, it began distilling in 2006 and played a defining role in the modern revival of English whisky, becoming England’s first registered whisky distillery for more than a century.
The distillery draws on locally grown barley, water from the Breckland aquifer and traditional copper pot stills, with whisky bottled on site and generally presented without chill filtration or added colour. Its style is clean, fruit-led and approachable, often showing orchard fruit, vanilla, malt biscuit and gentle spice, with peated releases adding a restrained, dry smoke.
The range includes accessible core bottlings such as The English Original and Smokey, alongside sherry cask, single cask and older limited releases. As English whisky has grown into a serious and increasingly recognised category, The English remains one of its key reference points: pioneering, quietly confident and rooted in the agricultural character of Norfolk.
