Although a recognised distillery was not established on the site until the nineteenth century, distilling at what is now Buffalo Trace is often traced back to the early frontier era in Kentucky, and the distillery presents its roots as reaching into the late eighteenth century. The modern name comes from the buffalo paths, or “traces”, that once crossed the land on their way west. During Prohibition the distillery famously survived by operating under a licence to produce whiskey for medicinal purposes, a rare privilege that helped preserve its continuity when so many others were forced to close.

Today Buffalo Trace is one of the most celebrated names in American whiskey, producing not only its own Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon but also a number of highly regarded brands distilled at the same historic site, including Blanton’s, W.L. Weller and Eagle Rare. The distillery’s range has helped make it a central force in modern bourbon, balancing broad popularity with a deep appeal to collectors and enthusiasts.

Buffalo Trace is also one of the most decorated distilleries in the world. The distillery says it has earned more than 40 distillery titles since 2000 and more than 500 awards across its whiskies, a record that helps explain why it is so often treated as essential territory for anyone seriously interested in bourbon.
