Bushmills is one of the most famous names in Irish whiskey, and its history is closely bound up with the long distilling tradition of County Antrim. The 1608 date associated with the brand refers to the area’s original licence to distil, while the Old Bushmills Distillery itself traces its own establishment to the eighteenth century. Today Bushmills presents itself as the world’s oldest licensed whiskey distillery and continues to build its identity around that unusually long history.
One of the distinctive features of Bushmills is that both blended and single malt whiskeys appear under the same name. Bushmills emphasises that its malt whiskey is at the heart of the range, and today describes itself as one of the few grain-to-glass distilleries in Ireland, with malt distilling, maturing, blending and bottling all taking place on one site.
Bushmills is best known to many drinkers for its blends, above all Bushmills Original and Black Bush, but its single malts are also central to the distillery’s reputation. The classic aged range still includes the 10, 16 and 21 Year Old expressions, and the house style remains notably smooth and fruit-led, with honey, vanilla and soft orchard-fruit character helping to define the profile.
