Woodford Reserve is one of Kentucky bourbon’s most polished and recognisable names, produced at the historic distillery site near Versailles in Woodford County. Distilling began there in 1812, and the surviving main buildings date from 1838, giving the site a special place in bourbon history. Owned by Brown-Forman, the brand combines that heritage with a distinctly modern premium identity, centred on small-batch production, pot still distillation and a house style that is rich, composed and immediately approachable.
The standard Woodford Reserve bourbon is built on a mash bill with a comparatively high rye content for the category, which gives the whiskey a firmer structure and more spice than many softer, sweeter bourbons. Notes of dried fruit, vanilla, cocoa, orange and oak are typical, making it a bourbon that works as well neat as it does in classic cocktails.
Alongside the flagship release, Woodford Reserve has developed a broader premium range that includes Double Oaked, Rye, Malt and Wheat, as well as the long-running Master’s Collection. That series has become one of the brand’s most interesting outlets for experimentation, exploring different grains, finishes and maturation techniques while staying rooted in Woodford’s characteristically elegant, spice-led style. Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall now leads that work, continuing a house tradition that places unusual emphasis on both innovation and historical craft.
