Miyagikyo is Nikka’s second distillery, established in 1969 in a wooded valley west of Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture. Conceived by Masataka Taketsuru as a counterpart to Yoichi, it was built to produce a softer, more elegant and more finely textured style of whisky, shaped by its cool, humid setting and a production approach designed to favour purity, fragrance and balance.

That character remains central to the distillery’s identity. Miyagikyo single malt is known for a fruit-led, floral style with gentle spice, malt sweetness and polished oak, offering a more delicate and supple profile than many weightier Japanese malts. Alongside its role as a single malt in its own right, Miyagikyo spirit also plays an important part in Nikka’s wider blended whiskies, where it brings finesse and aromatic lift.

The distillery’s own range is centred on the core Single Malt Miyagikyo expression, with additional limited and special releases appearing from time to time. Taken together, they show a distillery whose appeal lies not in power or smoke, but in precision, texture and a quietly distinctive elegance.
