Glengoyne Whisky

Glengoyne is one of Scotland’s most appealing distillery visits, set at the foot of Dumgoyne Hill just north of Glasgow. Although its warehouses sit across the Highland Line, the spirit itself is distilled in the Highlands, giving the distillery a character and setting that feel both accessible and distinctly rooted in place. Its proximity to the city, together with a handsome site and well-developed visitor experience, has long made it one of the easiest distilleries to visit for anyone exploring western Scotland.

The whisky is defined by a notably gentle, fruity house style. Glengoyne is known for using air-dried barley rather than peat-dried malt, and for a famously slow distillation regime that helps build weight and complexity without introducing smoky notes. Sherry casks play a central role in the range, bringing dried fruit, spice, toffee and soft oak, but the cask influence is generally handled with restraint, so the whiskies retain freshness and clarity as well as richness.

The core range has evolved over time, and the old 17 Year Old is no longer part of it. In its place, Glengoyne’s standard line-up is built around expressions such as the 12, 15, 18 and 21 Year Old, alongside more specialised releases including the distillery’s cask-strength bottlings and sherry-led collections. What unites them is a polished, rounded style that makes Glengoyne especially attractive to drinkers who value fruit, texture and well-judged maturation over peat or raw power.
